Teaching and Scholarly Interests: Social sciences

Dr Alex Chan is Principal Lecturer of PolyU SPEED. He received his Bachelor of Social Science from The University of Hong Kong in the 1980s, his Master of Art from Michigan State University in 1991, and his PhD from The University of Wisconsin-Madison, U.S.A., in 1997.

Dr Chan’s research interests are extensive. He studied China’s media policy at the turn of the 21st century. His publications can be found in the Journal of Contemporary China and Hong Kong Journal of Sociology.

In recent years, he shifted his interest to the study of social policy and social problems. In 2013, he published a book Poverty and Urban Slum: Experience of Marginalized People in Hong Kong, which addresses the issues involved in Hong Kong’s urban renewal. In particular, he describes in details the experience of people living in sub-divided units. The book was well received by the public and local media.

In terms of theoretical orientation, Dr Chan is interested in institutionalism and institutional analysis. He is currently pursuing his research interest along the direction of analyzing the relationship between institutions, social policies and social problems.

Dr Chan is also active in community service. He was once a Council Member of Oxfam Hong Kong, the Chairman of Fair Trade Hong Kong, and the Vice-Chairman of SynergyNet, an independent civil society-based think tank. He also contributes commentaries about social and political issues regularly to local newspapers, including Hong Kong Economic Journal and Hong Kong Economic Times.
